Pointers to Help You Find the Right Bicycle

Posted on 30th April 2011 by Seolink-Mountain Bikes in Mountain Biking - Tags: , , , , ,

There is no shortage of reasons for choosing to cycle. Some people choose to ride bicycles because they cannot afford the cost of gas and automobile maintenance. Others choose it because riding a bike is better for the environment than travelling in a car or using public transportation.

And there are some who like to cycle simply because it is fun. Whatever your reason for going cycle shopping there are some definite criteria that you need to think about before you make your choice. If you really want to choose the perfect cycling bicycle, you need to think about more than just what it looks like. Outlined hereafter are some pointers you can take into consideration when going out to buy your bike. No matter whether you happen to be interested in a girls 20 bike, perhaps a pink bicycle for a gift for your daughter or only looking over the best mountain bike reviews you need to obtain the best bike for your needs.

One thing that is usually the first on the list is the cost of the bike. Of course you are going to need to think about how much you will ride your bike as well as where you are going to be riding it, but cost is one of the most important things.

You can find bicycles that range in price from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars. That doesn’t mean all bicycles are going to cost that much, so don’t worry; there is no reason why you can’t find a great bicycle that is in your price range. You can go to auctions and find some of the best bikes available for a fraction of the price of new ones.

For road bikes take away 9 inches from the total of your inseam. This is because of the size of the tires on your road bike. Road bikes are meant for city cycling-the tires are thinner and work best on concrete paving. You will want to subtract 12″ for a mountain bike. Again this is to account for the type of tires you will be using. These tires are designed to handle rocky and jagged terrain so are therefore thicker. You can always use a mountain bike for city cycling, although this is not how they are best used.

You also want to make sure you leave some room between you and the crossbar of your bike. When you get a bike be sure to move the seat up a couple of inches from the crossbar. You should be able to still rest your feet flat on the floor. You will want to leave different clearance lengths depending on the type of bicycle you are buying. For example a touring bike will require around an inch. For mountain bikes you will require somewhere around 3 inches. As you can see, there are many things to take into consideration when deciding on the perfect bicycle for you. There are people who view the durability of a bike to be most important, this is especially true if you plan to use your bike a lot over rough terrain. Others need a bicycle that will help get them from point to point with very little chance of breaking down. Some people have to think very seriously about the price they are paying for a bike. Be sure to shop around before taking the final decision and parting with your cash. Buying the first bike you find is not advised, in doing this you could end up with a terrible bike and miss out on one that is perfect for you.

Road Bikes Healthy Riding Myths

Posted on 25th April 2011 by Seolink-Mountain Bikes in Cycling - Tags: , , , ,

According to an article in the Bike Radar magazine there are several common myths that are relevant to road bikes and are concerned with improving physical fitness. These myths have been challenged by researchers and from experimental proof.

These beliefs are often things of which we are all conscious or have at the bare minimum heard of previously. For example, it is all too often said that cyclists of road bikes should shave their legs in order to allow them to go faster – and several do. Even so, there are no experiments to clearly show that this works – even though a lack of hair may increase one’s muscular definition, or help make cleaning up one’s legs easier. Riding road bikes nonetheless is different to swimming, where bringing down the friction with denser water does carry sizeable benefits to the sportsperson in terms of speed over distance.

One more supposed myth is that those users of road bikes who sweat quicker and more intensely as compared to those that don’t are less healthy. This is seemingly wrong according to Dr Nick Gant of Loughborough University. He said that “after repeated training your body becomes more efficient at cooling, so you start to sweat earlier and produce a greater volume of sweat.” If this is the situation, then the sweatier users of road bikes may be the very best – despite the fact that they may not appear it of course!

Riding road bikes can take a lot out of an athlete, such as water leading to dehydration. However, the belief that cycling without eating will lead to your body drawing on the unfavorable fat that can be found around your pot-belly, and thus reducing the size of it, is also apparently misguided. This is very straightforward to recognize. If road bikes are used for exercising before morning meal, the road biker will at some stage for the period of the day intake calories equal to that lost when exercising without foodstuff.

Yet another myth is that when riding road bikes pumping up the tyres to be very hard will make the cycle go swifter (presumably by reducing the friction between road and tyre). Evidently, through an experiment conducted by Dr Timothy Ryschon when at the University of Texas, it was identified that there was very little variation between tyres that are pumped to the appropriate or normal pressure and those that were over inflated to make them very hard, rendering the added benefits of this advice as negligible.
